Accept Dankort payments, even when the connection fails

A connection outage does not have to mean that payments come to a halt. With offline payments, Dankort transactions can still be processed even if the terminal temporarily loses its connection to the payment system.

The payment is stored in the terminal and submitted for processing once the connection has been restored.

How offline payments are handled in practice depends on the payment solution you use. Please contact your terminal provider for guidance on your specific solution. If your payment terminal is integrated with a point-of-sale system, please contact your POS system provider.

Below, you can find the key things you need to know about offline payments with Dankort.

What you need to know about offline Dankort payments

For this type of offline payment, the customer must insert their physical Dankort into the terminal and authorise the payment using their PIN.

Payments with Apple Pay, Google Pay and other wallets cannot be made using this type of offline payment.

Dankort supports offline payments using chip and PIN. This also applies to the Dankort component of Visa/Dankort and Mastercard Dankort.

For other payment cards, the possibility of making offline payments depends, among other things, on the card type. For example, debit cards that require continuous balance checks cannot be used for this type of offline payment.

For payments made using chip and PIN, Dankort has a total offline limit of DKK 20,000.

The limit applies to the offline payments made with the card until the card is used again at a terminal with a connection. The offline limit is then reset.

Other cards may have lower offline limits.
